WINDOWSILL AND WATERING
You would assume that the sun shines straight onto a windowsill, yes? This is another spot where you must assess the intensity of the light, the direction the sun is shining, the time of day, and the duration of light through the window.
Many houseplant instructions suggest indirect lighting for indoor plants because in some geographical areas the sun shines red-hot (such as deserts, southern California, or the Mediterranean) and is too much for plants.
On the northeast coast, here in New York State, I like to offer direct sunlight to certain botanicals in my windowsill collection. If I see the necessity, as they are wilting or have a burnt leaf, I will shade the plants a bit in June and July. During the summer, the sun sets well into the evening at 9:00 p.m.—that is a long, hot day. I consistently put my air plant–filled glass globes and small succulents in direct sun, which help them grow large and robust.
The one factor I make sure to provide is sufficient water. The kitchen windowsill is a spot I see on my daily routine, so I can ensure the water threshold is consistently met. While I’m washing dishes or cooking, I love watching my collection grow. Having plants near the sink makes it easy to give them a bit of water at any moment the plants seem too dry. I keep a mister nearby to give the air plants a good, heavy mist at least twice a week.
Have I lost a plant or two over the years? Well, yes—haven’t we all? Life and living things are subject to many factors during their existence. Sometimes these factors create a moment when survival is compromised and their demise is unstoppable. I try to keep this from happening if I can. You can too, by following the information on threshold watering shown here.
